Best Review: Epson Stylus Pro 4900 Inkjet Printer - First, the good news. The Epson 4900 Stylus Pro is an awesome printer. It is built like a tank. The images are truly remakable, as it is designed as a photographer's dream come true. The colors are crisp, the high resolution is quite remarkable. I am impressed. Black and White photography was of very little interest to me, but now I am inspired to use the power that only black and white images convey. They render images in a timeless perspective. The wide color gamut at 2880 x 1440 dpi is equally splendid. You will NOT get this level of print from a one hour photo store.I am highly satisfied with Epson Ultra Premium Glossy Paper. It is a heavy weight paper. Also, the Premium Luster papers are excellent. The Enhanced Matte 17 inch x 100 ft roll paper is great for black and white images. Printing on wide 17 inch roll paper takes desktop photo printing to the next level. I finally printed one of my favorite photographic works, a 36 x 17 inch panoromic scene - 6 images stitched together; shot at Lake of the Clouds in the fall of 2010. The seasonal fall colors were at peek fall colors in Michigan's upper pennisula. The greens, red, orange, blue color is true to lifelike. I have only used the printer for a few weeks, but I am sure that many years of pleasure are to follow. Now, the bad news. It is expensive, and it is too large for the casual user's needs. I was shocked by the size and weight, even after reading about those specs. The Epson 4900 isn't designed to print web pages, letters, or simple graphics. This would understate its magnificent photographic intent. I have only used the highest resolution, but the longer wait is worthwhile. The printer driver is less than intuitive, but I expect practice will make it easier to use. I am unable to center some images on standard letter sized photo papers. Don't waste time time printing on 20 lb letter stock - you know the stuff that goes into a file cabinet. Also, you cannot print on stock smaller than 8x10 inch. This printer is for serious photographic and fine art printing to be framed and admired for many years. I will stick with the recommended Epson inks and papers, until something better can be found. It must equal the quality, and reduce the cost. I am afraid that Epson inks will be required. But, you will essentially buy ink at wholesale prices, since each cartridge holds up to 200 ml. They run $99 each, and should last for a long time. I have not tried the canvas stock, but am looking forward to that capability.Update, as of Feb. 27, 2012I never anticipated the joy of printing could be so satisfying. After five months of printing my initial anxiety about ink costs has dried. I have NOT replaced any cartridges yet, ignoring the low ink warnings on two cartidges. Remember the inital cartrigges are only 80 ml. I purchased 200 ml replacements in late November - still haven't run completely out of ink on a single cartridge. So, the warning light (that came on in Nov.) gave lots of lead time to order, and get delivery. I do expect to run out within a week or so, but the ink consumption is clearly very efficient. I don't recommend buying the entire set of inks, unless you are running high volume print production - your consumption may be much faster than mine. This might change when I begin printing on canvas.I recommend printing something, at least weekly to keep the eye candy coming off the press, and to reduce cleaning and/or alignment issues. I'm going to need to find a gallery to display my prints very soon. After a few weeks idle time, cleaning and alignment are recommeded. That process will take half an hour, reading instructions, etc. (If you haven't done it before.)Print quality has never failed to impress, and I've used Epson matte, lustre, and glossy papers. I took my time getting up to speed with the cumbersome driver features - that's a small hurdle that you must jump. Keep trying, until you learn what works best. If you get dark prints that need to be lightened a bit, check color settings in the print driver... change the gamma to 1.7 (i.e., the smaller of the two numbers.)Lastly, I retract my earlier statement about this printer's cost. It is a bargain, when contrasted to the cost for travel, lenses, camera bodies, etc.; printing has brought my digital dark room into the light of day. I love looking at the fine print.Enjoy!
